If you are around my age, you have probably heard of the “paint by numbers” we used to do as kids. How much fun was it? Now, I wanted to share that love of painting with adults!
Painting WITH numbers is a great way to create personalized pieces of art for yourself, your friends or your home. What I love most about this process is that ANYONE can be an artist if they have the right tools and the right directions.
Well, here you will find all of that (and then some). Below I have provided you with my simple “How To” steps, or you can grab the FREE Downloadable ZIP Package to help get you started:

The sunflower that I painted on my tank top for the segment on Home & Family is one of my favorite designs to get started with. It’s bright, fun and simple, plus who doesn’t like sunflowers?

Painting With Numbers
You Will Need
- Artist paint brush (small)
- Acrylic paint set; a variety of colors according to your downloaded color chart
- Paper or Iron-On transfer paper (this will affect transfer style in the directions below)
- Printer
- Iron
- Canvas; or any other surface you would like to paint on
How To
- Download the image you want to paint. Download my FREE Sunflower Package here (ZIP File):
[wpdm_package id=’2416′] I will have new designs on my ETSY store within a few days. - Print the image either on regular paper, or on iron-on paper. If you print the image on regular paper, see below for further instructions.*
- Transfer the image to your canvas, or any surface that you wish to paint. I am using iron on transfer paper.
- Get the paint colors that correspond with the color chart you downloaded (these can be approximate colors – the best part is you get to choose the colors you would like to use! Water-based acrylic paints work the best. If you are painting on clothing, you may want to get fabric paint.
- Check the color chart for your first color to use. These will go in numerical order, so start with 1.
- Open your paint and squeeze a little of the color onto your palette (in my case I’m using a paper plate…only the finest!)
- Paint all of the areas that are marked with that number.
- Wash your brush after you are finished with each number, and let the canvas dry before applying the next color. (If you are using acrylic paint, the dry time will be minimal. If you are using oil-based paint, each step could take up to a day to dry.)
- Repeat these steps until you have completed the painting and then be sure to double check you have not missed any areas.
- Hang up, wear, or show off to your friends!
* Transfer Instructions for Regular Paper
- Print the image.
- On the back of the paper, shade in the entire surface area with a regular lead pencil.
- Turn the paper back over and set it on the canvas (or any surface you want). Take the back of a pen (or any pointed object) and press on the lines of the image. Use a bit of force to have the lead transfer to your canvas.
- When you have outlined the entire image, you can remove the paper and paint.
