Big chunky blankets are comfy, cozy and very trendy this season, especially as we head into the colder months. These blankets are sold at all of the high-end home stores, and can range from $75 – $300. I’m going to show you how to make a blanket with things you may already have laying around the house!
To make these blankets, you can use any type of fabric you would like. You can repurpose old robes, flannel shirts, sweaters, t-shirts or baby blankets….since I love being nostalgic and creating memories that you can cuddle with, I think it would be awesome to take grandpa’s old sweaters and flannels and make them into a blanket. You could also go to the store and buy fabric or large yarn if you wanted to use new material. The best part about this is that you don’t need any tools except scissors! You don’t even need to know how to sew!
All you need to know is how to braid. Now, most girls (and parents of girls) will know how to braid. Guys? I’m not quite sure…so just in case, I’ll let you know the basics in how to braid.
You Will Need:
- Fabric
- Scissors
How To:
- Grab the fabric that you would like to use. Cut it in 2” strips. Choose the length you would like your blanket to be to cut the strips. A typical throw blanket for an adult is about 5’x7’. A typical baby blanket is 2’x3’.
- Take three strips together and tie at the top.
- Choose the fabric that you would like to be the focal point of the blanket. These will be your anchor strips. Completely braid the entire anchor strips, tying it off at the bottom.
- For your middle strips, grab three pieces and tie them off at the top.
- Start at the top in between two anchor strips. Take one strip of the fabric on the right side of the middle strip and push it through the top of a loop on the right anchor strip. Pull it all the way through.
- Repeat this step on the left side.
- Return to the middle strips and braid them twice (two cross overs of a braid), then repeat steps 5 and 6 above.
- Tie off the bottom at the same place that the anchor piece is tied.
- Repeat until you get the width and length that you want in your snuggly blanket.
Don’t worry if you think that this DIY is too difficult. It’s easy! Don’t be afraid to try! Check out my video and try it for yourself. Send us pictures of your snuggly blankets! Share your DIY home makeovers with us on Instagram and twitter and make sure you tag @paigehemmis and hashtag #DIYhome
