DIY Explorers Sandbox

Paige

Our DIY Explorers Sandbox is a cool and creative way to ignite your kids imagination and help inspire a history lesson while you’re at it. Here is what you need to get started!
You Will Need:
  • 3/4″ Plywood cut to 4’x4′
  • 4 1×6 wood boards, 2 cut to 48″ and 2 cut to 49.5″
  • Wood glue
  • Foam board
  • Gorilla Glue
  • Hammer or Nail gun
  • Nails
  • X-acto knife
  • Drywall mud
  • Exterior water-based latex paint (color of your choice)
  • Gloves
  • Paint brush
  • Sand
How To:
1. Cut the plywood into 4′ by 4′
2. Add wood glue and nail the 4 1×6 boards onto the edges the plywood. This will act as the sides of the sandbox.  The smaller pieces go on the two sides opposite one another.  Follow the same plan for the longer pieces.
3. Draw whatever shapes and designs into the foam board.  Cut out shapes with an x-acto knife.
4. Attach the shapes to the bottom of the box with the Gorilla Glue
5. Mix up your “monster mud”.  Take 4 parts drywall mud to 1 part paint and mix it together.
6. Spread the mixture over the entire sand box, making sure to get into the grooves around your shapes.
7. Let dry for 24 – 48 hours.
8. Add sand and any hidden treasures you would like to share with the kids. (Check the Home and Family Facebook page for instructions on how to create the artifacts!)
9. Enjoy!
