DIY Studded Bench Cushion

Okay, so I recently made a DIY Mudroom for the Home & Family house and I loved how simple it was but how great it looked that I made one for my Big Bear renovation. The only thing is I added an upgrade to our Big Bear Mudroom … I created a studded cushioned seat. Then I thought … Home & Family needs one of these! So … I re-created it and you can too! Here is what you need to get started.

You Will Need:

Fabric (at least 6 inches larger all the way around your seat opening)
Hot glue
Staple gun
Padding (batting or foam)
Upholstery studs
Needle nose pliers
Plywood (1/2” cut to the size of your bench top)
Hammer

How-To:

1. Measure the opening of your bench seat.

2. Have the hardware store cut your plywood piece a ½” smaller than your opening, all the
way around.

3. Lay out your fabric on a flat surface, and lay your plywood on top.

4. Add your batting or foam to the plywood, securing it with hot glue.

5. Turn the entire board with batting over and center it on your fabric.

6. Take the long sides of your seat and fold them over the batting and board, securing it to the board with hot glue.

7. Take your staple gun and go over the glued area, stapling the fabric on the board about 5” apart.

8. Continue this on the other side.

9. For the corners, it’s best to fold the fabric like you wood wrapping a present. Fold the fabric over, secure it to the wood with glue, and secure with staples.

10. Continue this all the way around until the fabric is secure on your bench seat cushion.

11. OPTIONAL: You can leave the cushion the way it is or add studs.

12. Take the seat and set it up with the front end to the top. Secure this in place or have a
friend help you hold it.

13. Take your needle nose pliers and grab the underside of the fabric tack and hold it in place, above the bottom part of the seat where the plywood is.

14. With your other hand, hammer the tack into place. Continue this every few inches across the base of your set until you have filled the entire front with studs. You only need to do this to the front of your cushion since all other sides will be hidden by the structure.

15. Voila! Set into place and enjoy a little padding for your bench seat!
