I’m in a house filled with musicians, and the musical instruments that come along with them! Music brings happiness to our homes, to our cars and to our lives. But after years of wear and tear on our musical instruments, sometimes they have to go to instrument heaven. Instead of sending them out to pasture, we can use them in DIY’s that remind us of all the wonderful times they’ve enriched our lives with over the years, so I thought I would create a DIY Guitar Shelf in honor of all those feels.
You Will Need:
- Old guitar (if you don’t have an old one you can pick one up here)
- Craft wood for shelves
- Wood glue
- Jig saw
- Pencil
- Tape measure
- Wood glue or hot glue
- Sand paper (60 grit and 100 grit)
- OPTIONAL: wall guitar hanger
- OPTIONAL: acrylic paint
- OPTIONAL: knick knacks
- OPTIONAL: small LED lights
How-To:
. Remove the strings of the guitar.
2. Take a pencil and use a scrap piece of paper or cardboard to make a small guide (about 1”) and draw the cut line on the face of the guitar.
3. Take a jigsaw and cut out the face.
4. Cut out the fret board (neck) with a jig saw as well.
5. Remove the top of the guitar face and set aside.
6. Sand down the cut edges until they are smooth.
7. Measure the areas where you would like shelves.
8. Cut the shelves using a saw (or have your hardware store do it for you)
9. Attach the shelves with wood glue or hot glue. Set aside to dry.
10. If you would like to paint the guitar, do so now including all of the shelves.
11. If you would to add lights, do so now.
12. Hang your guitar hangers on the wall according to the manufacturer’s directions.
13. Add your knick knacks, hang the guitar and enjoy your guitar shelf!
Tips:
1. If you are adding lights, consider adding a battery pack light set. That way, you won’t have to drill a hole for a cord and you won’t have to hide the cord as it hangs down the wall.
2. It is best to use guitar hangers, but if you would like to mount the guitar directly to the wall for extra stability, you can to that with wall anchors and screws through the back wood of the guitar.
3. You can get creative with the shelves – lay them out in a variety of patterns to see what you like best.
4. If you don’t have an old guitar that you can use for this, check online sites for used guitars, garage sales and flee markets in your area. It doesn’t matter if it’s in bad condition, has no strings or is damaged. That’s the beauty of it! (And the inexpensive part of it!)
