It’s no secret that music is a big part of my life. My hubby is a singer, my dad managed a record label … music is in my blood. While I may not be able to get up and sing you a little diddy, I’ve been learning how to sing myself, appreciating the benefits of professional education for singers. I love music and what it brings to my life. I also love butterflies. Last week a built a Butterfly House and I shared with you the story of how butterflies always seem to enter my life during great times of change but it is always comforting and beautiful because I know that something really exciting is around the corner. Well, I found a way to combine these two loves as well as my love for all things DIY and to create the most beautiful and interesting art installation for your wall!

• Old vinyl records (hopefully already ruined ones! Scratched or cracked works, too!) I’m using some 12” records and some 7” records.
• Mounting tape (adhesive picturing hanging strips)
• Crayons
• Oven mitts
• Heavy duty scissors
• Aluminum foil
• Cookie sheet
• Oven
• Card stock

How-To:

1. Cut out a picture of a butterfly from the computer on to card stock, or if you are feeling feisty, you can free had some butterflies on card stock.

2. Cut out the butterfly to use as a stencil.

3. Align the butterlfly on the record, maknng sure to center the image.

4. Trace around the card stock with white crayon on the vinyl (black) part, and use a black
crayon on the middle part.

5. Pre-heat your oven to 400 degrees.

6. Take your cookie sheet and cover it with aluminum foil. This is important…you don’t want
the plastic to melt onto your pan/cookie sheet.

7. Place the record in the center of the pan/foil.

8. Put in the oven at 400 degrees.

9. Keep an eye on the oven because it only takes about 60 seconds to soften.

10. Use your oven mitts, carefully remove the softened record. Use your heavy duty scissors
and immediately start cutting. Chances are you won’t be able to cut out the whole butterfly
during the first melting. If it starts to harden, put it back into the oven until it gets soft again.

11. When the butterfly is cut out completely, pop it back into the oven for about 20 seconds.

12. Take it out and bend the wings up, making sure you leave about a 1” strip that can easily
be hung like a picture frame with your adhesive strips.

Tips:

1. If the record starts to stiffen while you are cutting it, put it back in the oven for a minute to
make it soft again.

2. Open the windows in your house for ventilation.
You can find old records at thrift stores, and Amazon sells them for craft
