We are officially in Fall and dare I say…heading into Winter! So I’ve come up with a DIY that will take you through BOTH seasons. I did something similar last year, and got such a great response from our viewers! Thank you so much for liking mine and sending so many pictures of yours. I was inspired to create something similar this year, but of course I’m changing it and snazzing it up a bit. I hope you like this one as well! Last year’s model just required that you turn the sign around. This one takes just a few accessories, but it’s worth it! The finished product is adorable. Here is how to get started.
You Will Need:
- 4 Wood slices (mine are 8”, 10” and 2 are 12” but you can do any size you’d like as long as you have a small, medium and two larges – one is for the base)
- Box of small, wooden dowels
- Drill gun with drill bit and screw bit
- Wood glue
- Acrylic paint: Orange, black and white
- Artist paint brush
- Decorations for your snowman/pumpkins (I got Fall leaves garland, corrugated paper, thick plaid ribbon for the scarf, small black top hat, etc. )
- Pencil
- 2” drywall screws
- Glue gun and glue sticks
How-To:
- Lay out your wood slices. Paint the small, medium and large orange in the middle. (The base we will be leaving a wood color.) Set aside to dry.
- Once dry, paint the other side of your wood slices white in the middle.Set aside to dry.
- Line up your three slices in the shape of your snowman (you may need to move the slices around since they are not perfectly circular). Once you have them lined up how you would like them, take a pencil and make a small mark where they meet up.
- Put your slice on it’s side where you made the pencil mark. Take a drill with a drill bit just slightly bigger that your wooden dowel, and drill a hole about 1” deep.
- Repeat this step where each slice meets the other.
- Set your big slice on the wooden base. Mark with a pencil where you would like it to sit (ideally in the middle).
- Take a small drill bit and pre-drill where you marked, all the way through your base.
- Pre-drill the bottom slice as well.
- Turn the bottom over and screw in the base to the bottom slice with a 2” drywall screw. If your bottom slice can fit a couple of screws, repeat the process. This will just make it sturdier, but one is all you really need.
- Take wood glue and attach your dowel in each slice above the base. Set aside for the glue to dry.
- Take corrugated paper and roll it up to look like the stem of a pumpkin. Use hot glue to secure it to itself.
- Attach the stem on the pumpkin with hot glue. This can stay on since it will be covered with a hat when you turn him around.
- Take your artist paint brushes and paint and add some character to both sides. On the pumpkin side, mix some orange and black paint and paint on the grooves of a pumpkin. On the snowman side, paint black eyes, an orange nose, a black dotted smile and black buttons.
- Add accessories! You can add as much as you want! This is what I did: For the pumpkin, I added a fall leaf garland and added some loose fall leaves at the base. For the snowman, I added a small black top-hat on top of the pumpkin stem and thick plaid ribbon for a scarf. I added some Christmas greenery and pinecones on the base.
