Feather Artwork is a very popular decorating choice at the moment, but it can be very expensive! I’ve got an alternative for you…instead of spending hundreds or even thousands on this artwork, make your own for a fraction of the cost! You can make this fit your current decorating, or breathe new life into your old décor! You can make it as small or large as you would like…just depends on your style and your space.
I purchased a silver feather art piece for my home for $799…which is VERY expensive and it was on sale! Marked down! This is a huge piece (5’x5’), but you don’t need a piece this big to make a big statement. I will be re-creating this on a smaller scale.
Feathers at wholesale will cost you about $20 for a cluster…add a shadow box frame, some hot glue and some spray paint, and you could have a gorgeous piece of artwork for under $50!
You Will Need:
- Feathers
- Spray paint (any color you would like)
- Hot glue gun
- Hot glue sticks
- Foam core poster board
- Scissors
- Shadow box (I will used 20”x20”)
How To:
- Take the back out of the shadow box. This will be your canvas surface for your artwork. Make sure that it is clean and dry.
- Take your feathers and lay them out according to size. If you purchased the same size, you are a step ahead!
- Arrange your feathers in a circle. Depending on the size of your shadow box, you can arrange to have one layer, two layers, three layers or even more.
- Take your foam core and cut a circle 3” smaller that the diameter you want your feather to be. This will be your base circle.
- Take your glue gun and place a bead of glue on the outside of your circle. Immediately place a feather in place with the ends of the feathers hanging off the circle’s edge.
- Continue this process all the way around so that the outside of your circle is covered.
- For your next layer, repeat this process with a new piece of foam core cut in a circle 3” smaller than the last layer. Add the feathers all the way around.
- Attach these layers together with hot glue.
- Continue this process for each layer that you would like in your shadow box.
- If you would like to paint it, remove all of the pieces that are glued together from the shadow box.
- Lay out a drop cloth or newspaper to set your feathers on.
- Spray paint the entire project together. Be sure to watch for drips. You may have to do many coats to make sure that each feather and foam core are completely covered. Make sure that each layer is dry before you add an additional layer.
- Let the project dry completely before setting it back into the shadow box. You can secure this with hot glue and/or pins. Each shadow box usually comes with pins to display your project.
- Add the glass onto the shadow box base and secure into place.
- Sit back, relax and enjoy your new feather artwork!
