Every time I take my suitcase out to go on a trip, this happens…
I have to pack around the kitties! So I decided to make them their own suitcases! Well, a suitcase bunk bed that is. Whether it’s a bag, a box or a suitcase, cats love snuggle up in tight spaces so I thought this would be the perfect DIY bed for them. This would also work for dogs if your pup can hop up to the second tier. Here is what you need to get started …
You Will Need:
- 3 vintage suitcases
- 4 stair spindles
- 4 bun-feet table legs (small, stout legs)
- 4 table leg hardware packages
- 8 dowel screws (double-ended screws) 5/16 machine screws on one side
- 8 5/16 nuts
- 8 5/16 washers
- Drill slightly smaller that your screws
- Drill
- Blankets or pillows that your kitty would like
- Catnip to sprinkle on their new relaxation station
How To:
1. Cut the stair spindles in half
2. Take off the tops of the suitcases (of the bottom two if you want to keep the top for toy storage). Each suitcase is different, but mine can be unscrewed.
3. Add the bun legs to the bottom of the largest suitcase by screwing a hold in four corners of the suitcase, about one inch from the corners.
4. Drill a hole in the top and bottom of the cut spindles.
5. Screw in the dowel screws – with the wood thread into the wood. (The other machined edge will fit with the nuts and washers).
6. Add the spindles to the bottom of the next-largest suitcase by screwing a hold in four corners of the suitcase, about one inch from the corners, making sure to miss the other screws from the previous level.
7. Add pillows and blankets to each level.
