Have you ever arrived at the airport to realize that your bag has no identification on it, and you end up filling out the little paper one to put on your bag? And it’s rare if that little paper ID tag stays on the whole trip! So today, I am going to teach you how to do your own, DIY Leather Luggage Tags…that will be much sturdier than paper!
You Will Need:
- Light colored Leather
- Tag Template – downloadable PDF
- Craft/Utility knife
- Super Glue or E6000
- Alphabet & Number Leather Stamps
- Symbols Leather Stamps (any you would like to use)
- Ruler
- Leather shoe lace (optional)
- Wooden mallet or small hammer
- Leather hole punch
- Scissors
- Cardstock
- Clear plastic
- Pencil
OPTIONAL:
- Your favorite print wrapping paper or craft paper
- T-shirt transfer paper (for dark clothing)
- Clothes iron
How To:
1. Download luggage tag template here and print. Cut out the template.
2. Using a pencil trace the tag template for your front and back side onto your leather and then cut them out using a craft knife, scoring the edges slowly and carefully.
3. Do this again. You should now have two pieces of leather for your luggage tag. A “back side” and a “front side” that is plain leather for stamping with a flap or window for you to insert and display your personal information.
4. Take the front side of your leather piece and measure ¼” all the way around on 3 sides and mark with your pencil. This will create the flap.
5. Cut out the three sides for your flap.
6. Using your super glue create a thin line around the inside edges and bottom of your luggage tag template and glue together the front and back pieces. Make sure to leave the top open!
7. On the plastic, draw a rectangle that is 4”x2” and cut it out for your plastic window.
8. Take your alphabet stamp kit, your number stamp kit and your symbol stamp kit (anything you would like to use) and your mallet or small hammer to stamp your name, initials or whatever you would like onto the front of your personalized luggage tags. I found it was best to hit each stamp just once to make a clean and clear impression in the leather as opposed to light multiple taps. You want to make sure that you do not go through the leather completely.
9. Print your address label onto a piece of cardstock and cut out, or take a business card to use.
10. Insert both your plastic window and address label by sliding through the open top of your tag.
11. Punch a hole through the leather with your leather whole punch in the circle marked from your template.
12. Thread a piece of leather lace to serve as a strap through the hole and tie to luggage. (You can cut your leather pieces or use leather shoe lace.
13. Show off with pride and enjoy the benefits of a personalized luggage tag without the hefty price tag!
OPTIONAL:
14. Scan a large section of your favorite wrapping paper or scrapbook paper onto your computer. Print this image onto t-shirt transfer paper. I used transfer paper for dark fabric.
15. Using an iron, Iron on the transfer image onto one piece of your light-colored leather. This will be the “back side” of your luggage tag.
16. You should now have two pieces of leather for your luggage tag. A “back side” with your print and a “front side” that is plain leather for stamping with a flap or window for you to insert and display your personal information.
