As you all know I love to entertain people. I mean what’s better than getting your close friends together for a fun dinner party!? And when you throw a dinner party, the napkin rings are the icing on the cake. I just love how they complete the look when you are designing your dining room table. So I was recently at the store to update my table’s napkin rings and was shocked to see how much some of them cost! So instead of buying them I decided to DIY them for a fraction of the cost.
You Will Need:
- 20 gauge wire
- Needle nose pliers
- PVC Pipe (or any round like a spice container)
- Raw stones
How To:
- Take your pvc pipe and start wrapping the craft wire around it.
- Add your precious gem by wrapping the wire around the gem to secure it into place.
- You will need to wrap it both sideways and long ways for it to stay in place.
- Tie (crimp) off the ends
- Continue to wrap the wire around so that the ring is complete.
- Remove the pvc pipe and replace with a napkin
- Set the napkin on the elegant table setting and voila!
What kind of stones/gems can you use?
The craft store sells stones/gems all strung together called “strung beads”. These have a little holes through them that makes it easier to push the wire through the actual stone. This helps hold it into place. But you can use any stone or gem and just wrap the wire around it.
Do you have to use PVC pipe?
You can use anything that is round about the size of a typical napkin ring (which is about 1.5 inches).
Do we need napkin rings?
Actually, the history of the napkin rings is fascinating. It started hundreds of years ago as a way to identify the napkins of a household between weekly washes. In the 1800’s in Europe, it was used to convey wealth, as families would display their crests with silver, gold or jewels. For years, napkin rings were considered to be a part of the bourgeoisie – something only the wealthy could afford.
Most 19th century napkin rings were made of silver or silver plate, but others were made in bone, wood, pearl embroidery, porcelain, glass, and other materials. Now – they can be made of anything you would like! Today, they are really more for fashion and design than anything else!
